Captron™/Encaptron™

Captron™ 75 encapsulated scale inhibitor and Encaptron™ 95 encapsulated corrosion inhibitor provide controlled, long-term release of active inhibitors to maintain scale and corrosion inhibition without significant product loss and downstream system upsets.

Both encapsulated products are cost-effective means for maintaining downhole scale and corrosion inhibition without the disadvantages of scale squeezes or high volume corrosion inhibitor batch treatments, such as:

  • Loss of active material due to non-absorption into the formation or onto tubular walls
  • Formation damage from scale inhibitor squeezed or corrosion inhibitor accidentally introduced into the formation
  • Downstream system upsets due to high flowback concentrations of active chemical immediately after treatment

Captron™ 75 and Encaptron™ 95 products are formulated with a complex mixture of polymers, active material, weighting agent and brine carrier to avoid these problems. Solid capsules containing the active ingredients (actually aggregates of hundreds or thousands of capsules) are one- to three-millimeters diameter.

Long-lasting Protection

With a specific gravity much greater than well brine, the capsules settle in the rat hole to provide controlled, long-term release of active ingredients. As the capsules dissolve, they release active ingredient into the production stream. From the top layer of intact capsules to the perforated interval, a gradient of active ingredient is continuously replenished in the flowing production fluid.

Treatment life of the encapsulated scale and corrosion inhibitors depends on inhibitor volume and the well’s production rate, temperature, pH, and chloride concentration. When stored at temperatures below 120°F (49°C), Captron™ 75 scale inhibitor and Encaptron™ 95 corrosion inhibitor are stable indefinitely. They have been used successfully at bottom hole temperatures as high as 400°F (204°C).

Applied in a tailored program developed by CTI experts, Captron™ 75 encapsulated scale inhibitor and Encaptron™ 95 encapsulated corrosion inhibitor make a significant contribution to well production and long-term economics.
